Amery Hill School Announces New Headteacher

RobpotraitAmery Hill School in Alton is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Headteacher, Mr Rob Jeckells, who will take up the position, in September 2023, after the summer holidays.

Mr Jeckells is a highly experienced Deputy Headteacher from Kings’ School in Winchester. The comprehensive recruitment process included seeking external independent advice as well as involving a broad cross-section of Trustees, staff and students in the school. One of our objectives was to find a Headteacher who understands and shares our outlook, which is rooted in strong values. Throughout our discussions it was clear that Mr Jeckells, not only shares our focus on academic excellence and high achievement for all, but will continue to develop our ethos and vision in the future.

We would like to congratulate Mr Mann, our current Headteacher, who has been appointed as CEO of Wildern Academy Trust and will take up his new position in September.

Rob Jeckells said: ‘It will be my honour and privilege to lead Amery Hill School. I am a strong believer in the power of education to transform lives, and I’m ambitious to build upon the work of the current Headteacher and staff. The opportunity to lead Amery Hill School and serve the whole community is hugely exciting for me and I’m looking forward to leading the school into the next phase of its history.’

Lorna Vickery, Chair of Trustees, said ‘We are very sad to see Mr Mann depart and thank him for all the hard work and dedication he has shown to ensure the very best for the students at Amery Hill School. Mr Mann has worked tirelessly with the Senior Leadership Team, staff and Trustees over the last five years to strengthen the academic excellence of our school and maintain our caring ethos, whilst steering the school through the Covid pandemic. We look forward to a bright future for the school with Mr Jeckells, whilst wishing Mr Mann every success, health and happiness with his future career.’

Amery Hill Tops Happiest Schools Survey

  ‘The happiest secondary schools, ranked by Ofsted. Where’s yours?’ was the title of an article published on Sunday (9/3/25) by The Sunday Times*. We are delighted to see that Amery Hill School has been ranked joint top in Hampshire with three other secondary schools, with a happiness score of 95% compared to the national average score of 83%. “Achieving success in public examinations is always going to be important and something that the majority of parents will consider when choosing a secondary school for their child,” Mr Rob Jeckells, Headteacher at Amery Hill School commented, “but this survey also tells us that parents across the country are clear that academic success should not come at the expense of their child’s happiness and wellbeing.” He went on to add, "At Amery Hill School, we value the importance of both student wellbeing and academic excellence, and are proud of our reputation as a school that delivers these things within an ambitious educational setting that is exciting, enjoyable and accessible to all." *The Sunday Times analysed five years of Parent View data — surveys that parents fill out on Ofsted’s website about their children’s schools, with more than 500,000 doing so every year — to find some of the happiest in the country. The Sunday Times looked at Parent View analysis between 2020 and 2025 and chose the year in which the largest number of surveys had been completed, which tended to be the year of their Ofsted inspection. Schools with at least 500 places and with surveys completed by at least 100 parents in a single year were included in the survey. View Article

Grease is the Word

Earlier this month, Amery Hill School put on an incredible production of ‘Grease’, playing to sold-out audiences in the school hall for a week. Sixty cast members, ensemble and musicians put on a memorable show, with the finalé being a ‘singalong’ performance on Valentine’s night, for family and members of the public. There was lots of audience participation throughout this evening, with everyone staying on at the end of the night to belt out ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Greased Lightning’ and ‘You’re the One that I Want’ all over again! This show has been many months in the making – a collaboration between the school’s Music, Dance and Drama Departments. The standard of choreography and performance was exceptionally high this year, with a strong ensemble and brilliant live band supporting a cast of very talented actors. Amery Hill is grateful to everyone who helped put the production together including families and colleagues for their support with costumes – which helped take us right back to 1959! And the charity Livewire, who provided high quality lighting and sound equipment to help this musical positively burst off the stage. But above all, a huge well done to the students who performed with such skill and energy. Your commitment and hard work putting this show together really did pay off! View Article
